What are the virtues of Ginseng?

What is ginseng?

Ginseng is an adaptogen plant traditionally found in Northeast Asia, Korea and China, known worldwide for its beneficial effects on health. Known as the "king of herbs", ginseng is known for its ability to stimulate memory, relieve temporary fatigue, improve physical and mental energy, calm inflammation, reduce stress and prevent aging.

In fact, ginseng has so many health applications that it has been given the scientific name "Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer", "Panax" meaning "universal remedy" in Latin. Because it helps the body resist mental and physical stress, ginseng is considered an adaptogen.

There are several types of ginseng, but the most popular and effective is Korean ginseng, also called Asian ginseng or Panax ginseng. Its main active ingredients are ginsenosides.

What are the virtues of ginseng?

Although no official health claims have yet been published for ginseng, it is believed to have the following properties:

✅ Improves cognitive function and mood

Ginseng is believed to help improve brain function such as memory, behavior and mood during prolonged periods of mental activity, according to a 2005 study in the Journal of Psychopharmacology.

In a clinical trial involving 30 healthy young adults, researchers found that those who consumed Panax ginseng were less likely to experience mental fatigue during exams (compared to those given a placebo).

✅ Increases energy levels

Ginseng has been shown to help combat physical and mental fatigue and increase energy in both healthy people wishing to increase their physical performance and in people who are ill. It is one of the most useful herbal remedies for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).

✅ Supports the immune system

Another benefit of ginseng is its ability to stimulate the immune system which helps the body fight infection and disease. The roots, stems and leaves of ginseng have been used for centuries to maintain immune homeostasis and improve resistance to disease or infection.

✅ Has anti-inflammatory effects

Ginsenosides may have anti-inflammatory effects, according to experimental findings in the Journal of Translational Medicine. Ginseng is often used to reduce inflammation. The researchers suggest that ginsenosides may target immune system pathways that can reduce inflammation.

✅ Helps treat erectile dysfunction

Ginseng has long been used to improve libido and sexual function in men and women. Panax ginseng is considered an aphrodisiac in traditional Chinese medicine and is used to restore sexual function in men. A study in the Journal of Urology in 2002 demonstrated this virtue.

Tests were conducted on 45 men with erectile dysfunction. The subjects who took Panax ginseng for eight weeks showed greater improvements than those who received a placebo during the same period.

✅ Lowers blood sugar levels

The glucoregulatory properties of ginseng help reduce blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetic patients. In addition, the ginsenosides in this plant affect insulin production and improve insulin resistance in the body.
